This is a fantasy fungi, and is represented solely as an artistic, fantasy specimen. This is a hobby for me, and I enjoy making species that don’t actually exist, but could.
Gyromitra Ovum “False Egg Morel”G. Ovum; A member of the false morels, this beautiful specimen will never be discovered thanks to climate change. It is of unknown origin, however confidence is high that this species likely occurred briefly after several years of mutations in California. It is thought that it could not adapt to the rapid swings in temperatures and likely went extinct in 2015. It’s closest relative species is undetermined, however it is thought to have folds within the fruiting body which is why it wouldn’t be classified as a Morchella. Making this fungi the most vibrant false-morel we’ve never seen!
The fungi is easily recognizable by the vibrant yellow colors and lattice exterior. It’s believed that the fruiting bodies only appear during certain conditions, and the mycelium likely has a low tolerance for drought. With increasing droughts and wildfires in its probable native range, it just could not survive.

It is unfortunately clear that drought severity and frequency are on the rise, and we should expect these impacts to ripple around the planet affecting species from every environment on Earth. It is important to take steps now to help reduce the severity and onset of climate change for the sake of our planet and children’s future.
